They’ll definitely not have a personalized quote mug from you – so consider making one for them! That is, of course, if they enjoy drinking hot beverages…
While a Christmas mug can have just about anything on it, consider these pointers before putting the marker to the mug:
Do they have a favorite hobby (like gardening, skiing, creating music, etc. etc.)? You can draw pictures and write a quote regarding their favorite thing to do to pass time.
Do they have a favorite T.V. show or movie? Take a famous quote from it and stick it on the mug!
Are they obsessed with traveling? Write a quote in another language!
Do they obsess over politics? What is a quote from one of their highly regarded politicians?
You get the idea! Now, lets get into how to make one of these fabulous gifts:
How to Make a Personalized Quote Mug!
Make the Following 3 Purchases:
- Buy a white, ceramic mug. They’re cheap and can be found in hobby stores and the like. Ensure the ceramic mug is NOT glazed or fired already. Sometimes, local dollar stores will have them in stock. Choose the type of mug you want to give (shape, color, size, etc.) and start from there. White is usually the color of choice, since it will show all the colors you choose to write on it with.2. Grab some paint markers. Your local art store or superstore should have them in stock. Get they type and amount that you can afford. Remember, they’ll last a while, so you can make a ton of personalized quote mugs with them to get your money’s worth!
3. Glaze. You’ll need to purchase firing glaze that specifies it can be used in ovens for ceramic pottery. This can also be found in hobby stores or some superstores. However, in some cases, the makers you purchase will not require glaze! So read the instructions on your paint markers before making this specific purchase.
First, you’ll want to wash the ceramic mug to ensure there aren’t any faults or dirt on it. This will also make it ideal for when you bake the ceramic mug to make your markings permanent.
Next, figure out what you want to write and draw on the mug and where it will be placed. Consider how the person drinks their coffee – are they right or left handed? This small detail makes all the difference in where you put your quote. Do you want it to face them as they drink or face outward towards others as they drink? You can even consider drawing something on the INSIDE of the cup so they can see something cute or a specific quote once they’ve drank some of their beverage!
You may want to consider using stencils. Drawing with a pencil very lightly on the surface of the mug before going over it with a marker also helps ensure your design turns out how you want it.
After you’ve mastered where you want your designs and quotes, allow the paint markers to dry for up to a half hour to ensure they don’t smudge.
Now, you’ll want to use your oven to bake the ceramic mug and make your quote and drawings permanent. If you your markers require you use glaze, apply a thin layer of it to your mug using a paint brush. Then, follow the instructions on your marker set or your glaze bottle. Normally, you’ll want to bake the mug in the oven for half an hour at a heat of 350 F but this may be different depending on glaze and makers used.
Once baked, take the mug out carefully and let it stand until it cools – up to an hour. You’ll be impressed by the creative designs you’ve mastered and be ready to gift wrap your unique present in no time.
